Pumping Up Reader Brains With Metaphorical Muscle

Gioachino Rossini

“Give me a laundry-list and I'll set it to music.” – Gioachino Rossini, Born Feb. 29, 1792.

I hate hearing people say they have nothing to write about or nothing to say.

Take a thing. Any thing you find. Scroll way down your news feed. Click “random” on Wikipedia.

Then, connect it to your core topic. Is it similar? Different? Compare. Contrast. Make a metaphor or simile out of it. Where is the wisdom?

And believe me, there is always wisdom to be found looking at one thing through the lens of another. It's one of the miracles of this brain we have – spotting (or creating) patterns.

And creating these connections and pointing them out to others actually MAKES people smarter. Connecting two ideas makes a new neural connection. You grow new tissue. Your brain gets denser.

So write it. Share it. There is no such thing as having nothing to write about and nothing to say.

You are good enough to make music out of a laundry-list. And if you aren't, practice more.
